The Buffalo is a rugged and scenic river and although usually very clear, rain washed tiny clay particles often give it a turquoise color for extended periods making the river even more remarkable.

Rich in historical heritage and family history the region was once populated by Cherokee, Choctaw, Kickapoo, Sauk, Osage, Fox and other Indian tribes. In an area so full of history it's easy to imagine another more adventurous time. You can almost feel the history and the past as you travel about and visit historical sites, float the river or stop and enjoy one of the many breathtaking views.

Upper Buffalo River Country is located in rustic Newton County, Arkansas high in the Ozark Mountains. Newton County is also the “Elk Capital of Arkansas”. The county is home to a herd of Rocky Mountain elk that were relocated here over twenty years ago. They live in undisturbed habitat along the Upper Buffalo and are frequently seen in the Boxley Valley. The Hillary Jones Wildlife Museum is just north of Jasper on Rt 7. Just seeing a huge bull elk and hearing these massive bulls bugling is an experience you'll never forget. Not far from Boxley is the Ponca Elk Education Center on Rts 43 and 74.

Here in the Boston Mountains are the headwaters of the Buffalo River, the nations first national river, and a National Park, comprising over 90,000 acres, established in 1972 and under the supervision of the National Park Service. The Buffalo is designated a National Park like Yellowstone, Glacier, Great Smoky Mountain, Teton, Zion,Yosemite or Gettysburg.

The Buffalo(link to map) runs free flowing for a distance of 150 miles to where it joins the White River and is separated into three districts or areas, each with a wealth of information and activities.

Both of these rivers offer excellent fishing with world class trout fishing in the White. Check the size of the record trout taken from the White.

Buffalo Adventures is located in the Upper District on Rt 74 in Mt. Sherman above Kyles Landing. This is the largest district area wise and contains two wilderness areas and may be the most beautiful and rugged area. It has historic areas and miles of trails. There are only a limited number of access points here, miles apart and no other ways for driving access to the river.

The river flows through canyons and woodlands surrounded by miles of steep canyon bluffs and can not even be seen from the road for many miles until it flows under the Highway 7 bridge at Pruitt then disappears again. So if you're looking for an escape and some solitude here is where you can find it.....whether it be in some great lodging, on the river, a mountainside or in the woods.
